"Harris Support" Michelle Obama "Hope Is Coming Back"

Michelle Obama, the wife of former U.S. President Barack Obama and a Democratic heavyweight, appealed Tuesday for support for Vice President Kamala Harris, saying "America's hopes are coming back."

"It's a familiar feeling that's been buried deep for so long," Michelle Obama said at an event on the second day of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. "It's a force of hope."

"The anticipation, the energy and the thrill of another bright day, this is an opportunity to defeat the evil of fear, division and hatred that have engulfed us and to pursue the unfinished promise of a great country," he said. "America's hope is coming back."

"I'm ready," Obama said of Harris. "She's one of the best candidates for the presidency. Her story is yours and mine. It's about the majority of Americans who want to make a better life."

"Only Harris knows that invisible labor and unwavering commitment make America great," Obama said, directly targeting former President Donald Trump. "It's his old way to turn ugly, misogynistic, and racist lies into real ideas and solutions that can actually improve people's lives."

He also pointed to former President Trump's anti-immigrant racist remarks and drew a heated response from party members by saying, "Who will tell you that the job you are looking for may be a black job." It was a message that rebuked former President Trump in June for claiming that immigrants were "taking away black jobs and Hispanic jobs."

"Let's do anything," he said. "For 77 days (to the presidential election), we have the power to return the country from fear, division and the pettyness of the past. Let's keep this country moving forward, let's go to a higher place that we haven't reached."

According to local media, Michelle Obama's speech was reminiscent of "If they go low, we go high," which came out in 2016 when she gave a speech in support of then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
